LPR is highly sensitive to environment. Best results require a dedicated camera pointed at plate level, capturing plates at under ~40mph. Regular surveillance cameras mounted high on walls will catch some plates, but steep angles and distance reduce accuracy significantly. We recommend a pilot test for critical zones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a special camera for license plate recognition?
You can get basic results with a regular IP camera, but for reliable capture we strongly recommend a dedicated LPR camera pointed at plate level. Regular cameras mounted high on a wall will catch plates at steep angles, leading to missed reads. A camera at 3-4ft height, angled to capture plates head-on as vehicles approach, gives the best results. Dedicated LPR cameras also have specialized IR illumination to light up reflective plates at night.
How fast can vehicles be moving and still get a plate read?
With a dedicated LPR camera, we reliably capture plates at speeds up to about 40mph. Above that, motion blur becomes a problem unless you have a camera with a very fast shutter speed (1/2000s or faster). For parking lots and driveways where vehicles are typically under 15mph, a standard IP camera with good resolution often works fine.
Can I set up alerts for specific plates?
Yes. You can create allowlists (employees, expected deliveries) and blocklists (banned vehicles, flagged plates). When a plate matches either list, you get an instant alert. You can also set up 'unknown plate' alerts — useful for gated communities or restricted parking areas where every authorized vehicle is on the allowlist.
Does it work with plates from different states and countries?
We support US plates from all 50 states, Canadian plates, and most European formats. Our OCR models are trained on regional variations in font, color, and layout. If you operate in a region we haven't optimized for yet, let us know — we can typically add regional support within a few weeks.
